MICHAEL KIRKMAN

PROCESSION

OCTOBER 14 - NOVEMBER 12, 2023

For this show, through his oil on panel, Michael Kirkman invites viewers into a world where emotion and color converge, creating an aesthetic experience that is both captivating and thought-provoking. 'Procession' is an ode to the Surrealistic and Metaphysical movements form the last century.

In this exploration, we will delve into the fascinating world of Michael Kirkman's artistry, unveiling the inspirations, techniques, and philosophical underpinnings that shape his remarkable body of work.

The exhibition gives an insight into Michael's dream world of memories, longing for escapism.

Having studied at Edinburgh College of Art, Michael Kirkman graduated from an MA course at the Royal College of Art in 2010. He now lives and works in London.

Michael has produced commissioned prints for the National Theatre, Faber and Faber and Palace of Westminster (to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee). The York Art Gallery and Palace of Westminster holds work in their collection.

In 2019 he won the Design Award for ‘Best Patterned Fabric’ hosted by Somerset House, for his fabric ‘Eden’ made in collaboration with British Fabric manufacture ‘St Judes’

"Kirkman’s drawings are like memories inscribed, or vignettes of lived experience. Just as one can have detailed memories of particular objects from places we have visited, but no recollection of other aspects, so too Kirkman’s images convey a sense of our selective memory…. As he consumes experiences of travel and looking searchingly at the work of others he is developing his own singularly powerful draftsmanship; a constant readjustment to his surroundings.” - Simon Martin, Director, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester
